Swanstar was lost to her dreams.
The she-cat pointed up her square muzzle, sniffing in the sharp scents of the world all around her. Droplets of dew hung like a fine mist in a foggy grey world of Fourtrees. All the same, she could smell nor recognise any other thing. The heavily-built she-cat slid across the ground like a ghost trying to ignore the nippy coldness at her side. But Swanstar did not know why her reddish paws led her so, or why she moved so swiftly.
Soon she came to the edge of a huge gnarled root sprawled over the land for many leagues. Swanstar investigated it with a gentle prod of her creamy ginger muzzle, sneezed, and promptly darted away. It smelled like dead cats, and where her muzzle had dipped for her sniff was a dot of red. The red shifted, suddenly appearing as spots of scarlet flecked across the soft brown of the ghostly Great Oak. Blood-scent and fear scent mingled together. Swanstar pulled up on her paws and raced away with her blue eyes suddenly blinded…the terrain grew familiar…the mist was lifting…she was back with StarClan… At her foot was a small silver tabby tom. She nearly knocked right into him, but his fiery blue eyes showed only amusement. Swanstar blinked. Took a deep breath as if she could hardly believe it. And slowly said, “Brother?” But the cat only nodded his head. Swanstar hardly believed it. It was her deaf and mute brother, who had not lasted a season in the forest.
“Beware, for the full moon will be soon turned red.” Swanstar looked around for where the booming voice—like every voice she had ever heard—came crashing down onto her ears. Darkness engulfed her. When she blinked open bleary sapphire eyes, she was in her den, sniffing in the fresh scent of rabbit and cat. “Wait,” she muttered in her half-sleep. “Don’t go. I’m awake.”

Jetice turned swiftly to see his leader."I brought you a rabbit."He wisperd to Swanstar. For some reason he felt weird sitting in a lonley old den with no sound. He wonderd how his leader Swanstar could live like this.I would never be able to become a leader even in a long time from now, I could never get used to this quiet or the darkness of the old den. He couldnt help rembering how she could even sleep in the den when a lot of leaders before her has died and knowing she is risking her life for the clan everyday.

Bramblepaw sat outside the den patiently. "Swanstar?" He asked walking in and stopped. Jetice was there. "Swanstar, I'm ready to be an apprentice and I heard Twistedpaw wants to be a med. cat apprentice." He mewed softly, because he was speaking to his leader, there was no need to yell or to be harsh.

Jetice was mad that the little Apprentice that wanted to interupt them because he decided he wanted to be a Warrior. Everyone knew that it was up to the leader if he could be a warrior. Jetice grumbled and ignored the Apprentice. "It would be nice if we could talk alone but sence Bramblepaw wants to go first". Jetice padded out madly and almost ran Bramblepaw over on the way out.

"Jetice," Swanstar started, but her voice faltered. She may be leader of this Clan, but it wasn't her duty to run after every angered cat. By StarClan, she thought, she'd be chasing her own tail! Instead, she pried open her tawny muzzle and took in a deep yawn. Swanstar stood up among her mossy bed and shook the loose threads of soft blue-green tendrils from her glistening white pelt. Feeling somewhat more awake, she padded over to Bramblepaw.
"It is I, and not you, who will decide whether you are ready to be a warrior or not," she said. Her lips curved to reveal her pearly teeth. "You have much to learn. Tell me what makes a warrior. If you can answer that question, you are ready for anything."
